The Hallé – Sir Mark Elder & Sir Stephen Hough

18 May 2024 @ 7:00 pm 10:00 pm

FINALE: SIR MARK’S FINAL SHEFFIELD CONCERT AS HALLÉ MUSIC DIRECTOR

In his last performance in Sheffield as the Hallé Music Director, Sir Mark Elder pays tribute to a fundamental Hallé custom by featuring a repertoire that includes both classical and contemporary English music. In this authentic flagship programme, he is accompanied, as he was in his initial season as the Hallé’s Music Director, by Sir Stephen Hough, an unquestionable “keyboard colossus” (The Guardian).

They work together on Sir Stephen’s personal piano concerto, which is performed for the first time in Europe just three days before in Manchester. The composer describes the piece as having a significant display of romantic virtuosity, comparable to a blend of Korngold, Ginastera, Walton, and Barber, although it does not precisely resemble any of them. The concert commences with Dvořák’s Scherzo capriccioso, characterised by enchanting Bohemian melodies and rhythms.

The culmination of this celebration includes Butterworth’s orchestral rhapsody “A Shropshire Lad,” which serves as a heartfelt postlude to his songs that are based on A.E. Housman’s poems, as well as Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.” The masterful vignettes of Elgar’s “friends pictured within” represent the work that most effectively captures Sir Mark’s splendid legacy with the Hallé.
