SUMMARY:Little School of Ecology - Haddon Medieval Park
DESCRIPTION:Bringing The Little School of Ecology to Haddon Mediaeval Park’s picturesque\, historic grounds is a wonderful way to fulfil our mission of inspiring the next generation to value and protect the natural world. In this historic site that was once a deer park in the Middle Ages\, children from the ages of five to eleven can learn about the significance of nature\, have fun playing outside\, and get a basic understanding of tree\, flower\, bird\, and insect identification. \n\n\n\nHaddon Hall always offers free admission to children (15 and under). For a fun family outing\, join us every Tuesday for free children’s tours of the Hall and\, for a small fee\, archery sessions in the parkland. \n\n\n\nHaddon Mediaeval Park is the setting for The Little School of Ecology\, so please be aware that it is a natural\, undeveloped area. There aren’t many trails\, and the ground can be slippery\, muddy\, and uneven. Children should wear sturdy shoes\, such as walking boots\, for their own protection\, and adults should bring warm\, waterproof clothing in case it gets cold or wet during your visit. Keep in mind that neither the weather nor the species you may see can be guaranteed. Nature is full of surprises! If the weather forecast calls for heavy rain\, high winds\, or storms\, the session will still go ahead as planned. \n\n\n\nFor kids between the ages of 5 and 11\, accompanied by an adult (please\, no more than three kids per adult). \n\n\n\nDates: Tue 29 Jul\, Tue 5 Aug\, Tue 12 Aug\, Tue 19 Aug and Tue 26 Aug 2025

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Brand new for 2025\, we are delighted to welcome Amelia Jane Gilding to lead a Kintsugi art workshop in the Tudor Stables Studio at Haddon Hall. Kintsugi\, which roughly translates as ‘golden joinery’\, is a Japanese art form based on the philosophy that the value of an object lies not in its beauty but in its imperfections\, and that these imperfections are something to celebrate\, not hide. The art of Kintsugi is a technique where broken pottery pieces are repaired with gold\, creating an even stronger\, more beautiful piece of art. \n\n\n\nThis beginner’s half-day workshop is an introduction to the technique. All tuition\, materials and equipment are supplied\, as well as two pieces of pottery for each participant to work on. The pottery is broken in a controlled manner and is then repaired by applying gold to create stunning lines. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is suitable for everyone over the age of 18. No previous experience is required.  \n\n\n\nTime: AM session 10.30am-1.00pm or PM session 2.00pm-4.30pm

SUMMARY:MAGIC: Charms\, rituals and superstition in Elizabethan England
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating look at how the supernatural was an accepted\, and respected\, part of life in Elizabethan England. \n\n\n\nSet in the famously unspoilt Medieval\, Tudor and Elizabethan interior of Haddon Hall and inspired by the hall’s remarkable ‘witchmarks’. \n\n\n\nRarely seen objects from the Haddon archive alongside imaginative displays\, projections and soundscapes. \n\n\n\nHaddon Hall – ‘The most perfect house to survive from the Middle Ages’ – announces details of a new exhibition for autumn 2025. MAGIC: Charms\, rituals and superstition in Elizabethan England will explore the magical folklore\, rituals\, fears and superstitions that were an everyday part of life in the second half of the 16th century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAGIC is inspired by Haddon Hall itself – a truly enchanted place. Set in acres of ancient medieval parkland with a backdrop of the rolling Derbyshire hills\, Haddon’s magical turrets and battlements have inspired writers\, artists and filmmakers for centuries. Step inside and you’ll find witchmarks carved into doorways\, protective grotesques overlooking the courtyards and ancient poems scratched into the stained glass. With over 900 years of history\, Haddon’s medieval\, Tudor and Elizabethan interior\, including the world-famous long gallery\, is remarkably untouched by time. Haddon was left empty for over 200 years from the beginning of the 18th century\, its rooms lying quiet and untouched – a true ‘sleeping beauty’ – the magic of the hall’s Elizabethan heyday perfectly preserved. There can be no better setting to tell the important role of everyday magic in Elizabethan society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn MAGIC Haddon’s famously unspoilt medieval\, Tudor and Elizabethan rooms will host beautifully-curated and interactive displays telling the story of everyday magic\, from food folklore in the kitchens and the natural wisdom of ‘cunning folk’ in the Parlour to herbology in the State Bedroom. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will also explore the fear of the supernatural in Elizabethan society and the steps people took to protect themselves from dark magic\, especially the perceived threat from witchcraft. \n\n\n\nMAGIC will incorporate exhibits from Haddon itself\, including the hall’s numerous apotropaic marks (or witchmarks) and objects hidden by past occupants of the hall to ward off harmful magic\, combined with beautiful images and displays. With academic guidance\, the exhibition is rooted in the fascinating history of the period. \n\n\n\nHowever\, in true Haddon style\, there will be no shortage of atmospheric delights. The tapestry-lined Great Chamber will be transformed into a magical ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’\, mixing Haddon artefacts with more ‘fantastical’ finds. Elsewhere\, imaginative displays\, exhibits and projections will add to the enchantment. \n\n\n\nBut as ever\, the true star of the show will be Haddon Hall itself. Visitors to MAGIC will be able to enjoy Haddon’s remarkable rooms\, galleries and gardens while imagining how the hall’s Elizabethan occupants lived their lives with an acceptance of\, and respect for\, the supernatural. \n\n\n\n“The word that is used most by anyone visiting Haddon is ‘magical’. Whether friends new or old\, long-time devotees or first-time visitors\, children or grown-ups – all are impacted by the essence of magic that imbues every stone in this remarkable house. Haddon is an enchanting place to visit at any time of the year\, but I am particularly excited to welcome visitors this autumn to explore the practices\, rituals and superstitions that were an everyday part of life in Elizabethan society.” \n\n\n\nLady Edward Manners

SUMMARY:The Trees of Haddon Medieval Park
DESCRIPTION:Go behind the scenes into the private parkland that surrounds Haddon Hall and see the beautiful acres of Haddon Mediaeval Park\, which is the oldest and biggest rewilding project in the Peak District. The trees are the most important part of this old landscape. In the Middle Ages\, they would have been very important for getting wood for building and heating and cooking. There are more than 40 different kinds of plants and animals here\, and each one is home to a lot of birds\, small animals\, insects\, fungi\, and lichen. \n\n\n\nWe’re happy to have Jason Ingamells FRGS back this year to lead two Trees Walks in Haddon Mediaeval Park. Jason has led wildlife expeditions in the UK and around the world for more than 20 years. He has worked with the BBC\, the Royal Geographical Society\, the Eden Project\, and the National Forest. He loves the countryside and loves sharing what he knows with others. Jason will take you on a 2- to 3-hour walk through the Mediaeval Park’s different woodland areas\, where you can look at and take pictures of Haddon’s trees and the animals that live there. \n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for everyone over the age of 16 with a reasonable level of fitness. \n\n\n\nYour ticket includes a complimentary tea\, coffee or soft drink in our restaurant after the walk\, as well as half-price admission to Haddon Hall and its beautiful gardens on the same day. \n\n\n\nHaddon Hall is a privately-owned estate\, and one of the only houses in England to have remained in one family’s ownership for its entire existence. Your support enables us to protect the buildings and precious landscape here for the future.
